Website rebuilds and speed for WordPress. Slow site? Lighter & faster.

Matt Knighton

One client’s home page went from 2.1 seconds to under a third of a second.

Is it time?

Six signs your website is holding you back.

I rebuild and speed up WordPress sites that have become slow, heavy or hard to change. Most sites I see show two or three of these.

  • Slow on a phonePages take seconds to appear on mobile data, and visitors leave before they load.
  • Hard to editAn old page builder or theme makes small changes risky, so nobody updates the site.
  • Plugin pile-upYears of plugins doing overlapping jobs, each adding weight and another thing to update.
  • Stuck on old versionsWordPress, PHP or the theme can’t be updated without something breaking.
  • Looks datedThe design no longer matches the business, and it shows most on a phone.
  • Hard to findWeak structure and no structured data, so search engines and AI answers pass it over.

Two ways to fix it

Clean it up, or rebuild it.

I measure first, then recommend one. If a clean-up will do the job, I’ll tell you.

Speed clean-up

Keep your site. Fix what’s slowing it down.

Best when the design and structure still work, and the weight is in images, plugins and hosting.

  • Images compressed and resized
  • Unused plugins and scripts removed
  • Caching and a CDN set up
  • WordPress, theme and PHP brought up to date

Full rebuild

A new foundation, with your content and links kept.

Best when the theme or page builder is the problem, or the site has to change with the business.

  • A fast static site, built with Astro and hosted on Cloudflare Pages
  • Content moved across and tidied
  • Every old URL redirected with a 301
  • Search Console moved and checked after launch

Real results

Measured before. Measured after.

Two rebuilds: one for speed, one for a new brand and domain.

HESC · Melbourne · 2022

A third of the weight, seven times quicker.

Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain’s site ran an old version of WordPress and Divi, and the marketing team couldn’t update it. Rebuilt in the block editor for partner agency Cox Inall Dentsu.

Vistage Australia · 2024

TEC became Vistage, without disrupting members.

A new name, a new look and a new domain for Australia’s original CEO network, with WordPress brought fully up to date.

  • 3 weeksto a new name, look and domain
  • 1,000+members kept their logins
  • 301sso old links still land in the right place

How it works

Measured at the start, and again at the end.

Four steps, weeks not months, and you see the numbers at both ends.

  1. Step 1

    Measure

I test your site as it is: page size, load time on a phone, PageSpeed score and structure. You see the numbers first.

  2. Step 2

    Plan

Clean-up or rebuild, and what each would change. You get a written plan and quote before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Build

I work on a staging copy while your live site keeps running, and you review it before launch.

  4. Step 4

    Launch and compare

Old links are redirected, Search Console is updated, and the same tests run again so you can see the difference.

Every job includes

No surprises. Nothing locked in.

After launch, keep it fast yourself, or let a care plan do it from $150 a month.

See the care plans
  • Before-and-after numbers: page size, load time on a phone and a PageSpeed score
  • Work on a staging copy, so your live site keeps running
  • Every old URL checked and redirected, so search rankings carry over
  • Structured data and a sitemap, ready for search and AI answers
  • A walkthrough so your team can update the site themselves
  • Your domain, hosting, content and code stay in your name

Not sure which you need?

Send me your site. I’ll tell you what’s slowing it down.

Add your web address and what’s bothering you. I’ll take a look and reply with what I’d do first: a clean-up or a rebuild.

Some Clarity Around Page Speed

Unlike other measures of speed, your Google Page Speed score is not a measure of speed. It’s a guideline. If I was going Mach 1 or Mach 2 I know my speed has increased. However, Google Page Speed and YSlow are not a direct measure of speed. They are a guideline created to get to…

Questions

Rebuild and speed questions, answered.

How long does a website rebuild take?

Weeks, not months. A speed clean-up of an existing site is usually quicker than a rebuild. The TEC to Vistage rebrand, with a new name, a new look and a new domain, went live in three weeks.

Will I lose my Google rankings?

Not if the move is done carefully. Every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new page, Search Console is updated, and I check for broken links and missing pages after launch.

Do I need a rebuild, or will a speed clean-up do?

The numbers decide. If your theme and structure are sound, cleaning up images, plugins, caching and hosting is often enough. If the page builder or theme is the weight, a rebuild saves you patching the same problems again.

How do you measure the speed?

With the same tests before and after: page size, load time on a phone, and a Google PageSpeed or GTmetrix score. HESC’s home page went from 3 MB to 1 MB, and its load time from 2.1 seconds to 290 milliseconds.

Will my team be able to update it?

Yes. I build with the WordPress block editor and a lean theme, so text, images and pages are edited in one place. Then I walk your team through it.

What does a rebuild cost?

It depends on the size of the site and what it needs to do. After a 20-minute call and a look at your site, you get a written quote before any work starts.

Who looks after the site after launch?

You can, and I’ll show you how. Or a WordPress care plan keeps it updated, secured and monitored every month, from $150 a month.

Let’s figure it out together

You don’t have to build alone.

A little guidance. A good conversation. A better next step.
